WEBSITE HISTORY

Patient Empowerment • Hope • Informed Decision Making

As rehab therapists treating patients with medical issues, both my sister and I always believed strongly in creating environments that support patient empowerment, hope, and informed decision making. We then found ourselves needing to personally apply this approach when she was diagnosed with ocular melanoma.

Later, with this same perspective and drawing from additional experience in public health communication roles, I established EyeMelanoma.org in her honor in 2011 as a not-for-profit website that focuses specifically on providing patients and their families with up-to-date online links to reliable resources and information on this rare cancer. (See "Methodology" section below for details.)

This website is designed to be a calming and organized counterbalance to information overload and scattered results when searching online for research, treatment, and support services. For both those newly diagnosed and those many years along, EyeMelanoma.org continues to locate and carefully review information and post links throughout each month. Please spread the word ... EyeMelanoma.org is organized to quickly get the OM community to important resources and information.

In addition, the EyeMelanoma.org website was created to be a place of encouragement by "shining a spotlight." During the 20+ years since her diagnosis, I have seen resources and options increase and evolve for the better. When using the links — to organizations, support services, and the broad array of educational materials compiled here — may you also be heartened by the crucial and expanding work being done in ocular melanoma treatment, research, and support by truly dedicated people.

Wishing everyone strength and healing,

Erica Barrett, MOT, MBA

In loving honor of my sister Paula

WEBSITE METHODOLOGY

Please be aware that EyeMelanoma.org never requests and never accepts any advertisements, sponsorships, or donations/funding of any kind.

  • Ocular melanoma resources are carefully reviewed and manually added from trustworthy organizations, including OM-related nonprofits, healthcare organizations, academic/medical centers, public health agencies, medical journal publishers, and medical associations.

  • As a U.S-based website, the listed resources are primarily from the United States. (EyeMelanoma.org is also able to include information from organizations based outside of the U.S. that provide their resources in English; most often, this comes from the UK, Canada, or Australia or from international groups.)

  • Whenever possible, a resource's description is taken directly from the relevant information on the resource's website and placed in quotes, accordingly. All content written by EyeMelanoma.org is shown on this website without quotation marks to differentiate the source.

  • As part of EyeMelanoma.org's impartiality, resources are listed either alphabetically or in date order.

  • In addition to new items being presented, each existing resource and its hyperlink are re-verified throughout the year. The bottom of each webpage notes the date of the most recent updates and additions to content on that page. A separate date below it shows when all of the hyperlinks on the page were last re-checked.

  • In order to highlight the latest information on medical-related topics for OM, only the medical-related educational videos, conference presentations, and journal articles that were created or published during the past two years stay listed on EyeMelanoma.org each month.
